At Brimscombe Primary School our creative curriculum is enriched through off site visits, which give students access to resources and specialist centres, both locally and further afield.
In the Autumn term we run an annual overnight residential for all Year 5/6 pupils to a Youth Hostel either at St. Briavels, the Brecon Beacons or this year, in Bristol. Year 6 enjoy a week long adventure holiday at either PGL at Liddington near Swindon or at Culmington Manor in Shropshire. These residential trips provide our oldest pupils with challenges and new experiences, which for some include the new experience of spending time away from home.
Throughout the year Year 5 and 6 students raise funds to help part fund these trips, and often raise in excess of £500 with parental support, and advice from their class teacher.
The Year 5/6 trip ties in closely with the curriculum. During the visit to Bristol pupils explored the SS Great Britain and the M Shed, then took a ferry trip around the floating harbour as part of work about Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The following day they visited @Bristol, in preparation for the following term's work on 'Changes'.
The Year 6 residential trip usually takes place in late March, as the children begin their preparations for transfer to secondary school. As a result of the physical challenges and the demanding level of teamwork, co-operation, trust and independence are developed, preparing the children well for the challenges of the transition.
