Our vision for science is that all children will become confident young scientists by taking a practical and inquisitive approach to science. We aim to prepare children with the key skills, to flourish in an ever-changing world.

Curriculum

t Brimscombe Primary School, our science curriculum is delivered through the Developing Experts programme, which provides a carefully sequenced and knowledge-rich approach to science learning. The curriculum is designed to develop pupils' understanding of the key disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics whilst fostering curiosity about the world around them. Scientific knowledge is taught progressively from Reception to Year 6, ensuring that pupils build upon prior learning and develop a secure understanding of scientific concepts over time. Through engaging and relevant learning experiences, children explore important scientific ideas, make connections across topics and understand the role that science plays in everyday life and the wider world.

Teaching 

Science lessons are designed to be engaging, practical and enquiry-based. Through the Developing Experts approach, pupils are introduced to key scientific vocabulary and concepts before applying their knowledge through discussion, investigation and problem-solving activities. Teachers use high-quality resources, interactive presentations and carefully planned practical experiences to deepen understanding and address misconceptions. Working scientifically is woven throughout the curriculum, enabling pupils to ask questions, make predictions, conduct fair tests, observe over time, gather and analyse data, and draw evidence-based conclusions. By combining practical enquiry with secure scientific knowledge, pupils develop both scientific understanding and the skills needed to think and work as scientists.

Achievement 

Assessment in science is used to ensure that all pupils develop a secure understanding of the knowledge and skills outlined in the curriculum. Teachers continually assess learning through questioning, discussion, observations and the review of pupils' work, enabling them to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching where necessary. The Developing Experts programme provides opportunities to assess pupils' understanding of key scientific concepts and vocabulary throughout each unit, while retrieval activities help teachers monitor long-term retention of knowledge. Progress is measured against year-group expectations, ensuring that pupils build a coherent body of scientific knowledge over time. Through regular assessment and responsive teaching, we support all children to become confident, knowledgeable and successful scientists.
