Mathematics

Stay alert and hold firmly to all you believe. Be mighty and full of courage. Let love and kindness be the motivation behind all that you do.'

1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Mathematics at Brimscombe C of E Primary School

At Brimscombe, our vision—“Let love and kindness be the motivation behind all you do”—is at the heart of our Mathematics teaching. We create an inclusive environment where every child feels supported, valued and able to succeed. Teachers carefully identify when pupils need additional support or have gaps in prior learning and respond with care, ensuring all children can access and enjoy Mathematics.

We aim to inspire excitement, curiosity and confidence so that all pupils become capable mathematicians who can apply their learning in a range of contexts.

Our Approach

Our teaching follows the National Curriculum and is supported by the CanDo Maths scheme, alongside a range of high-quality resources that support deep understanding.

Lessons are carefully structured:

  • Each lesson begins with a recap of previous learning, helping to reinforce knowledge and identify any misconceptions.
  • This is followed by explicit teaching and clear modelling of new skills, ensuring concepts are accessible to all learners.
  • Pupils then practise, apply and deepen their understanding in a supportive environment where mistakes are welcomed and valued as part of the learning process.

Teachers use ongoing assessment to adapt teaching, providing timely support and ensuring that all pupils make progress.

Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced into small, manageable steps, allowing children to build secure knowledge over time. We aim for all pupils to:

  • Develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Recall and apply knowledge accurately and efficiently
  • Use mathematical vocabulary to reason and explain their thinking
  • Apply their skills to solve problems in a range of contexts

We nurture every learner with patience and care, supporting them to revisit and secure prior knowledge where needed.

Curriculum Implementation

Mathematics is taught through a small steps mastery approach, using clear lesson structures, consistent models and high-quality resources to support understanding.

  • Maths on Track sessions provide additional practice in arithmetic and number fluency
  • In EYFS, children develop early mathematical understanding through practical, engaging experiences alongside the CanDo approach
  • Teaching is informed by best practice, including spaced retrieval, collaborative discussion and explicit modelling
  • Assessment is ongoing, allowing teachers to adapt lessons and provide targeted support

Curriculum Impact

Our Mathematics curriculum promotes strong outcomes and positive attitudes. Children at Brimscombe:

  • Feel confident and supported in their learning
  • Are willing to take risks and learn from mistakes
  • Show curiosity and enjoyment in Mathematics

Progress is monitored through assessments such as Remember Its, NFER tests and ongoing teacher assessment. Alongside this, we value pupils’ engagement and confidence, ensuring they flourish within a caring and encouraging environment.
