Computing

Our Vision

At Brimscombe CE Primary School, our computing curriculum is underpinned by our school vision:
“Let love and kindness be the motivation behind all you do.”

We aim to nurture respectful, responsible and confident digital citizens who use technology with care, empathy and integrity.

We recognise that our pupils come to school with a wide range of digital experiences from everyday life. It is our mission to build upon this to prepare them for an ever-changing technological world, including future careers that may not yet exist.

Intent

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils leave Brimscombe CE Primary School with secure knowledge and skills across the three strands of the National Curriculum:

  • Computer Science – understanding programming and how digital systems work
  • Information Technology – using systems to store, retrieve and communicate information
  • Digital Literacy – evaluating content and using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly

We follow the Purple Mash scheme of work, which underpins National Curriculum objectives and provides a clear, progressive framework. This ensures that learning is purposeful, structured and builds over time.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that:

  • Units build progressively on prior knowledge and skills
  • Key concepts are revisited regularly to strengthen understanding
  • New learning is introduced alongside opportunities to rehearse and deepen previously taught skills

This approach ensures children develop both confidence and competence in computing.

Implementation

Computing is taught in structured sequences of lessons throughout the academic year, following our whole-school progression framework.

Teaching and Learning

  • Units of work are carefully planned to ensure progression across all year groups
  • Learning revisits prior concepts while introducing new skills, supporting long-term retention
  • Children experience a balanced coverage of all three strands in every year group
  • Knowledge and skills become increasingly specific, complex and independent

Use of Purple Mash

  • Purple Mash supports teaching, assessment and evidence of learning
  • It enables children to practise, apply and extend skills in an engaging digital environment
  • Teachers use it to track progression and ensure curriculum coverage

Online Safety

We place a strong emphasis on staying safe online:

  • Dedicated online safety lessons
  • Regular revisiting of key messages
  • Development of digital awareness and responsibility alongside technical skills

Impact

Our computing curriculum results in a fun, engaging and high-quality education for all pupils.

By the time children leave Brimscombe CE Primary School, they:

  • Demonstrate clear progression in knowledge and skills across all three strands
  • Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly
  • Show confidence in problem-solving, coding and digital creativity
  • Are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond

Evidence of learning is recorded and celebrated through Purple Mash, showcasing the children’s growing independence and capability.

Ultimately, our approach ensures that pupils not only understand technology but use it as a tool to learn, create and contribute positively to the wider world.
