History

 Intent

Here at Brimscombe, it is our aim to instil a love of History in all our children. We aim to provide a history curriculum which delivers appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum History Programmes of study. We aim to provide an interesting and varied curriculum that interests and intrigues our children while meeting the needs of all backgrounds and abilities. From EYFS up to the end of KS2, the children will be taught about important historical events, where they take place within a historical timeline and famous historical figures.

Implementation

As a school, we maintain strong links to the National Curriculum guidelines to ensure all aspects, knowledge and skills of History are being taught across all year groups. Teachers use the History curriculum map to ensure they are covering the required topics and have access to skills progression grids to ensure there is clear skills progression throughout school. Our curriculum is taught on a two-year cycle (Year A and Year B) and within phases (Years 1/2, Years 3/4 and Years 5/6).

Where appropriate we use historical artefacts, visitors, workshops and visits to further immerse the children in their learning. We aim to give our children as much understanding as possible about what is was like to be around at a particular period in history by having practical and experiential lessons where possible, which utilise a range of relevant resources and artefacts.

Impact

The effectiveness of the subject is measured in various ways at Brimscombe. Through pupil voice children will be able to talk about the skills and knowledge they have acquired. They will also be given the opportunity to talk about changes which could improve their learning.

Work in books and on Seesaw will show that a range of topics are being covered in line with the curriculum map. Teachers will also plan in cross curricular opportunities when appropriate further strengthening pupils knowledge . Teachers use a range of formative assessment strategies to inform them as to how pupils are progressing. Targeted questioning, verbal feedback, marking completed work in class and crucially a close monitoring of key History skills all assist teachers in not only accurately assessing attainment but also highlighting children who might need additional support in mastering key skills and concepts.
