Bee Hotel

Arts and Science Week had the children buzzing with excitement!

Arts and Science Week had the children buzzing with excitement!

During Arts and Science Week, the whole school worked with artist and mum, Jo Fry, to make an almost fully recycled bee hotel and café in the school's wildflower meadow. The construction, which is made from an old rabbit hutch, includes natural materials such as slate, bamboo, twigs and moss and nearly all of its materials have been recycled or upcycled.

Its unique structure means that as well as being able to hibernate in the wooden base, bees can collect nectar from the sedum roof.

The children thoroughly enjoyed being hand-on with saws, drills, and paintbrushes, and when they weren’t labouring on the hotel itself they were learning all sorts of information about these fascinating hard-working creatures, which sadly are so endangered because of shrinking natural habitats.

The bee hotel has already proved successful, with the insects visiting even in the first few weeks since it was built.
