Remote Education
Attendance at school is essential for pupils’ education, wellbeing and wider development. Remote education is not an equal alternative to attending school and will only be considered as a last resort when attendance is not possible, but a pupil is well enough and able to continue learning.
When remote education may be provided
Remote education may be considered:
-
when the school is closed, or attendance is restricted, because it cannot open safely;
-
when local or national guidance prevents some or all pupils from attending;
-
in exceptional individual circumstances where a pupil is unable to attend school but is able to learn; or
-
as a short-term part of an agreed plan supporting a pupil’s reintegration into school.
Remote education will not normally be provided for routine, short-term illness when a pupil is not well enough to learn.
Individual pupils
Decisions about remote education for an individual pupil will be made on a case-by-case basis. The school will work with the pupil, parents or carers and, where appropriate, the local authority, medical professionals or other agencies.
Before providing remote education, the school will consider:
-
whether the pupil is well enough to learn;
-
the expected duration of the absence;
-
reasonable adjustments that could support attendance;
-
the pupil’s age, needs and circumstances;
-
any SEND, disability, medical or mental health needs;
-
access to appropriate technology and learning resources;
-
safeguarding and data-protection requirements; and
-
how the provision will support the pupil’s return to school.
Remote education will normally be a temporary measure within a wider plan to improve or restore attendance.
What pupils can expect
Remote education will be proportionate to the pupil’s age, needs and circumstances. Provision may include:
-
work linked to the curriculum being taught in school;
-
printed or digital learning resources;
-
clear instructions and appropriate deadlines;
-
regular communication with school staff;
-
opportunities for feedback; and
-
reasonable adjustments for pupils with SEND or disabilities.
The precise arrangements will be agreed with the family. The school will consider whether pupils need support with devices, internet access or printed resources.
Engagement and attendance
Parents and carers should support pupils to complete the agreed learning and inform the school if they experience difficulties.
The school will monitor engagement with remote education and review whether the arrangements remain appropriate. A pupil receiving remote education because they are unable to attend school must still be recorded as absent using the appropriate attendance code.
Safeguarding
The school’s safeguarding and child-protection procedures continue to apply during remote education. Communication, online activity and the use of digital platforms must follow the school’s safeguarding, online-safety, behaviour and data-protection expectations.
Any safeguarding concerns should be reported to the school immediately.
