Design Technology
'Stay alert and hold firmly to all you believe. Be mighty and full of courage. Let love and kindness be the motivation behind all that you do.'
1 Corinthians 16:13-14
Curriculum
Design and Technology is taught through the Kapow Primary scheme, which provides a progressive curriculum that develops pupils' creativity, problem-solving skills and technical knowledge from EYFS to Year 6. Pupils explore the key areas of mechanisms, structures, textiles, cooking and nutrition, and electrical systems, building their knowledge and skills through carefully sequenced units. Children learn about the design process, investigating existing products, developing their own ideas and evaluating their work against clear design criteria. The curriculum enables pupils to understand how design and technology shapes the world around them while encouraging innovation, resilience and practical application of learning.
Teaching
Design and Technology is taught through practical, hands-on learning experiences that follow the Kapow design cycle: design, make and evaluate. Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to research products, develop technical knowledge, learn new skills and apply them to purposeful projects. Teachers model techniques and support pupils in selecting appropriate tools, materials and components safely and effectively. Throughout each unit, children are encouraged to think creatively, solve problems, test ideas and refine their designs. Relevant links to science, mathematics and everyday life help pupils understand the real-world applications of their learning.
Achievement
Design and Technology is assessed through ongoing formative assessment throughout each stage of the design process. Teachers evaluate pupils' ability to generate ideas, apply technical knowledge, develop practical skills and evaluate the effectiveness of their finished products. Assessment is gathered through design work, practical outcomes, discussions, observations and reflective evaluations. Progress is measured against the knowledge and skills outlined within the Kapow curriculum, ensuring pupils develop increasing confidence, independence and competence as designers and makers as they move through the school.
